Andy Weir’s brief afterlife dialogue has God tell a newly dead man that reincarnation is real and that every human who ever lived or will live is one soul. The universe exists so that soul can mature through every life; kindness and cruelty are both self-directed. When every life across time is finished, the soul is born as a being like God—the whole cosmos having been an egg.
