I use an OWC Envoy Ultra as the fast external SSD behind Time Machine on my main laptop. The Thunderbolt 5 speed is useful, but the important feature is more ordinary: automatic local versioned backups are happening again, on a sturdy drive that can stay attached to the desk and travel when I need it.
Why I returned to Time Machine
I went a long time without using Time Machine. That left too much recovery dependent on cloud sync, Git, application-specific history, and my memory of where a file used to be. Those systems are valuable, but none is a complete versioned picture of the laptop.
Time Machine is useful because the default behavior is incremental and automatic after the backup disk is selected. It can restore an earlier file, migrate to a replacement Mac, or recover more of the machine after a failure. I do not have to remember to copy a project folder at the exact moment before I need the old version.
The Envoy Ultra is a portable Thunderbolt 5 SSD with a built-in cable, a metal enclosure, and IP67-rated resistance to dust and water immersion. OWC advertises transfer speeds up to 6,000 MB/s. Time Machine does not need that peak number to be useful, but fast incremental work makes the drive less intrusive when it is attached to a modern Mac.

The Envoy is not my argument against off-site backup. A drive beside the laptop cannot protect against every theft, fire, surge, or account problem. It is the local layer: fast, inspectable, and easy to browse backward. A robust backup plan should preserve important data in more than one physical place.
How it fits the desk
The drive connects through my CalDigit Element 5 hub, which gives it a real downstream Thunderbolt path while one cable charges and connects the laptop. Both products have the dense machined-metal feel I like in objects that live under cable tension.
The best backup hardware is not the fastest benchmark winner; it is the device attached often enough for the backup to exist. The Envoy Ultra makes that easy in my setup. I am glad to have Time Machine quietly accumulating recoverable states again, because the moment I need to time travel is the wrong moment to discover that the ritual was manual.
