NEW: Study of 50,807 searches and 465,823 citations reveals how to influence Google AI Overviews.
A recent study of 50,807 searches and 465,823 citations shows how to influence Google AI Overviews.
Spoiler alert: It's not that hard.
And the lessons here apply to AI Overviews, Gemini, ChatGPT, etc.
So, just to set the scene...

A few weeks back, The Guardian published an article titled "Google AI Overviews put people at risk of harm with misleading health advice." After it went viral, Google is said to have removed AI Overviews for some medical queries.
That whole thing prompted SE Ranking to a deep dive into 50,807 health-related searches and 465,823 citations in Germany.
Why Germany? Because their healthcare system is very strictly regulated. So if their results are easily influenced by random sites, that paints a pretty telling picture of where things stand in the U.S. and elsewhere.
While the story was framed as one about health, I view it as one that explains why AI behaves the way it does, not just in health, but across all industries.
Here are my main takeaways:
1. Google AI Overviews will only show up more often from here.
The study found that more than 82% of health-related searches triggered AI Overviews.
That provides a good window into where search is headed. Literally in one of the most regulated, sensitive categories, Google is defaulting to generated answers most of the time.
These things aren't going anywhere. Adjust accordingly.

2. Authority consistently beat expertise.
This was the single biggest takeaway from the study for me, because it really supports a lot of what many of us already believed to be true.
"Domain authority often outweighs expertise in AI Overviews."
One of the top five most-cited domains was not a hospital, government site or academic journal.
It was a career and job platform.
Medical content is not even its primary function.
Yet AI consistently treats it as a trusted health source.
Why?
Because:
- It has strong domain authority
- It publishes a lot of related content
- It sits in the right semantic neighborhood
- Its pages are easy for AI to parse and reuse
AI Overviews are not judging credentials the way humans do.
They are inferring trust based on authority signals + usability.
That applies far beyond healthcare.
SaaS.
Ecommerce.
Finance.
Legal.
Real estate.I've posted some recent SEO Stuff case studies in 3 out of those 5 categories and I'll hit the other 2 this week. The results tell the whole story.
If your domain is authoritative enough and your content is legible, AI will use it.
This is why SEO Stuff's Gold Plan (https://www.seo-stuff.com/gold-plan-package) is structured around boosting authority.
Because that is the only currency that matters both in traditional search (Google) and AI search (AI Overviews, Gemini, ChatGPT, etc.).

3. The other interesting finding: AI doesn’t cite the pages that rank.
The study found:
- Only 36% of AI-cited URLs appear in Google’s TOP 10
- 54% appear in the TOP 20
- 74% appear in the TOP 100
Meaning a huge percentage of AI-cited content would never be discovered through normal search behavior.
Even when AI and organic search cite the same domains, they often cite different URLs.
A few takeaways from that:
Ranking the page is no longer the only goal.
Publishing the page AI wants to quote is increasingly a priority.
And that page might be:
- a comparison page
- a FAQ
- a definition
- a buyer guide
- an explainer buried deep in your site
This explains why so many brands “rank fine” but never show up in AI answers.
You need to account for the whole pie now.
And that is why SEO Stuff's Premium Content Bundle (https://www.seo-stuff.com/premium-content-bundle-service) contains so many pieces of content.
You need to be prepared for multiple scenarios in 2026 search.

4. Youtube was the leading source for health-related AI Overviews.
That shocked a lot of people, but I'm not sure why.
AI Overviews clearly prefers formats that are:
- easy to extract
- easy to summarize
- already structured as explanations
That includes:
- video transcripts
- step-by-step explanations
- Q&A-style content
- concise, modular answers
Youtube has been getting boosted in search results for a years.
There are actually some nifty tricks using it that have been helping a lot of business rank high in the SERPs that I won't disclose here for the sake of us all being able to milk them a little while longer, but they're also not that hard to find online with a bit of research.
https://x.com/i/web/status/2011836046385012984
Mind you, while YouTube was at the top in AI citations for health queries, it ranked 11th in organic search results.
"This shows that AI often prioritizes video content even when more authoritative, easier-to-find sources exist."
5. You should be applying the lessons from this beyond the health space.
When you combine these findings, the pattern is clear that AI Overviews do not reward who should be trusted, but rather who is:
- easiest to understand
- easiest to justify
- safest to cite at scale
We literally see that:
- government and academic sources are underrepresented
- authority-heavy but non-expert sites show up
- lower-ranking URLs get cited
- scale and consistency matter more than pedigree
I don't know what this means for society at large, but it is definitely great for businesses that want to shift and mold AI Overviews, Gemini, ChatGPT, etc.
AI visibility is clearly influenceable by normal businesses.
You don’t need to be a government body.
You don’t need academic journals.
You don’t need institutional authority. You do need operational authority.
That looks like:
Pages AI can safely quote
- direct answers
- clear definitions
- comparison and buyer intent content
- structured FAQs
Coverage at scale
AI confidence is built through repetition.
One page rarely moves the needle, but dozens of aligned pages do.
Authority signals to break ties
When AI sees multiple usable answers, authority still decides.
Backlinks, mentions and brand signals matter.
This is exactly why SEO Stuff’s plans map cleanly to how AI Overviews actually work.
The Gold Plan pairs:
- long-form, intent-driven pages designed to be cited
- authority signals that make quoting you defensible

And if your gap is volume and coverage, the Premium Content Bundle exists for a simple reason:
AI rewards consistency at scale.

This study was about health, but the lesson applies everywhere.
If you build your site like a brochure, AI will ignore you.
If you build your site like a library AI can quote, you’ll show up.
